Nowadays, variation and complication of the taste of coffee depend on various factors such as source of coffee beans, species, cultivation area, harvesting, processing, roasting, and brewing. The meticulousness of indulging in the taste of coffee brings us aesthetics. Evolution of coffee culture, however, gradually destroys coffee itself in consequence of repetitive producing of coffee industry, using coffee for keeping awake, and the lifestyle of urban hustle. The change of coffee culture is what the artist was interested in. Thus, the artists created the works, which is inspired from coffee brewing and sipping routine during lockdown in his hometown, called “Sensory Memory.” The Sensory Memory is composed of 4 parts which are Paintings, Videos, Installation, and Relational Aesthetics.
Coming back to hometown in the lock-down period after living in a crowded city like Bangkok makes the artist nostalgic for his places breathing in the memory in Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima. This small town has Khmer castle placed in its downtown and historic sites mingled with the neighborhood. Phimai historical park was built in the late 11th century with the belief of Hinduism. They believe that all gods remain in Mount Meru, a core of the universe, located in paradise. Therefore, the temple could be compared as doing the replica of Mount Meru in the human realm. “The Khmer temple was like a center of the universe.” Consequently, the artist made drip coffee by using coffee beans from 9 cultivated areas which have different signature tastes. The artist drinks the coffee in 9 memorable places surrounding the center of the universe. After that the artist sprinkles coffee grounds that left over from brewing onto paper by using sensation, i.e. savour, inhalation, eyesight, and hearing.
Relational Aesthetics, Videos, and Paintings in the Sensory Memory are the important core of this work because they are inseparable. Relational Aesthetics is a new Art that was created in the 20th century focusing on creating interaction between viewers or its surrounding. “The most important point of Relational Art is a moment that everything is relating and continuing on. It is not extraordinary or new or anything hard to understand. It is simple and comes naturally. It is easier to relate, especially in Thailand since we eat and live with it every day.” The mentioned quote was spoken by Rirkrit Tiravanija, one of the significant core artists of the Relational Aesthetics. In the Sensory Memory exhibition, the artist was inspired by the Relational Aesthetics method and recorded videos to collect space and time as in film. Afterwards, he started to paint using all of his senses like impressions, scents, noises, and feelings about the place at that exact time.
